Made in India. Patented in India. Built for the World

What happens when two young founders look at a material that hasn’t changed in decades and simply ask, “Why does it have to be this way?”

For as long as architecture has used cladding, one assumption has stood unchallenged: it must be rigid. Flat panels for flat surfaces. Straight lines for straight buildings.

But architecture stopped standing still a long time ago.

Curves have become sharper. Forms have become more complex. Buildings are no longer defined by straight lines and flat surfaces they’re defined by arches, columns, continuous curves, and geometries that conventional rigid materials simply cannot follow.

At Articlad, this contradiction was impossible to ignore. So we asked a different question:

What if cladding didn’t have to be rigid at all?

That question is the origin story of Flexura Articlad’s flexible architectural cladding technology, developed and patented in India, covering both the technology and its manufacturing process.

The idea was never “another cladding product”

It was to challenge a fundamental material characteristic that the entire industry had accepted as fixed.

Behind Flexura are Smita Tiwari and Siddharth Thakker, the young founders who set out to rethink cladding from first principles not by improving what already existed, but by questioning whether it needed to exist in its current form at all.

The question they asked was simple. The answer was not.

Why flexibility is the easy part and engineering is the real challenge

Making a material bend is not difficult. Making a material bend while still performing like architectural cladding is where things get hard.

Because in material science, nothing moves in isolation. Every property is in tension with another:

  • Flexibility vs. dimensional stability
  • Thinner profiles vs. structural performance
  • Reinforcement vs. manufacturability
  • Surface finish and durability vs. everything above

Increase flexibility, and stability can suffer. Reduce thickness, and performance has to work harder to compensate. Add reinforcement, and the entire manufacturing process shifts under you.

This is the web Smita and Siddharth had to work through formulation, reinforcement, thickness, surface characteristics, and manufacturing understanding how a change in any one variable ripples through all the others.

That process, refined and re-refined, became Flexura: a thin, flexible cladding technology engineered to conform to curves, arches, columns and complex architectural surfaces without giving up the visual and functional standards expected of real world cladding.

This is where material innovation stops being product development.

It becomes engineering.

The part we’re proudest of isn’t the patent. It’s where it came from.

Advanced building materials are often assumed to come from somewhere else imported technology, licensed formulations, foreign IP.

Flexura was conceived, developed, and manufactured in India.

Smita and Siddharth represent a generation of Indian entrepreneurs who aren’t content to manufacture what the world has already invented. They want to question it, engineer it, patent it, and build it here.

Because in our view, Make in India cannot stop at manufacturing.

The next step is Invent in India:

Build intellectual property. Develop material science. Create proprietary technology. Manufacture at scale. Take Indian innovation to the world.

From manufacturing products to developing intellectual property. From competing on cost to competing on technology.

Why the patent matters more than it sounds like it should

A patent is, on paper, a legal document. Nothing more than that, technically.

But for Articlad, a granted patent for Flexura represents something much bigger than legal protection. It represents an Indian manufacturing company doing the work of material science from scratch, protecting the innovation it built, and turning years of formulation trade-offs into a real, buildable, real-world architectural technology.

That’s not a footnote. That’s the point.

Two young founders. One Indian company. A patented technology. A much bigger ambition.

This is the kind of innovation Articlad wants to stand for:

Not just better cladding. Better questions. Better materials. Better engineering. Made in India.

We don’t just want to manufacture the future of building materials.

We want to invent it.

And with Flexura, we’ve only just started.
